Johnny Gargano Comments On WWE Exit

Johnny Gargano has commented on why he decided to no re-sign a new contract with WWE. Gargano, who became a free agent in December 2021, was a recent guest on The Sessions podcast with Renee Paquette. During the interview, the former NXT Champion explained his reasons for leaving WWE:

“I felt like I was in a good place, I’d felt this way for awhile to where I felt like I accomplished everything I wanted to accomplish in NXT. It is kind of a scary thing to have a new baby on the way and decide I’m going to turn down this new contract that’s a good contract, a safe contract that you’re going to get money every single week coming in, to kind of go off and do your own thing.”

Johnny Gargano and wife Candice LeRae became parents to son Quill in February 2022. Gargano stated in his farewell promo back in December that wrestling is now not the first the priority, as fatherhood has taken over.

It had been speculated by some that Johnny Wrestling may be leaving NXT to join a rival promotion. By letting his contract expire instead of being released, Gargano is free to show up for any promotion as soon as he wishes. However, in the same interview Johnny Gargano has disputed these claims. Instead, Gargano states that he didn’t want to become stale on TV and that he doesn’t want to outstay his welcome:

“I wasn’t leaving to go to any particular place. I kind of just felt like I needed to go because I felt like if you watch a TV show or if you watch anything in general, if you see the same character – obviously, I changed character, I turned heel, I did funny stuff, I did things like that here and there – but if you see the same person on TV for five years, six years, it gets stale. I believe that being off TV and being away makes people miss you and I think people need to have a chance to miss you.”
