In front of thousands of British fans, Will Ospreay finally captured the AEW World Championship.
Competing in the main event of AEW In at Wembley Stadium, Ospreay defeated Kenny Omega to win the title for the first time in his career. The closing moments of the match saw Ospreay hit Omega with a tiger driver and 2 hidden blades to win the match and the title.
Ospreay bled heavily throughout the match and was driven through a table. Omega targeted Ospreay’s surgically repaired neck and hit the Brit with everything, including the Tiger Driver and the One Winged Angel, but Ospreay persevered. Omega was also busted open, but not as badly as his rival. As a result of the victory, Ospreay was the first Englishman to win the title on British soil.
Tons of pyro went off inside Wembley after the match as the show went off the air.
Ospreay earned the opportunity at the championship by winning the Owen Hart Cup back at Forbidden Door. While MJF was the World Champion at that point, Maxwell Jacob Friedman dropped the title to Omega on Dynamite shortly afterwards.
The victory now means that Ospreay is 2-1 in victories over Omega. The first match at WrestleKingdom 17 saw Omega pick up the win, with Ospreay winning the rematch at Forbidden Door later in the year.
Will Ospreay Adds World Championship To AEW Record
Ospreay previously held the International Championship twice before the big win at Wembley. The Aerial Assassin also previously held the World Championship in New Japan during his time in the promotion.
Ospreay also has a 3-match undefeated streak inside Wembley. The British wrestler defeated Chris Jericho in 2023, followed by a victory over MJF the following year. The win over MJF was also the start of Ospreay’s second International Championship reign.
