While London hosting a WrestleMania still looks to be nothing more than a distant dream, Ireland recently threw a curveball for fans.
In early May, Kilkenny Councillor Maurice Shortall spoke with the Irish Mirror about possibly bringing the biggest pro wrestling show of the year to the country. Shortall stated that they were looking to place a competitive bid for Mania, adding that the country has a strong track record in hosting previous events:
“Ireland is well placed to present a credible and competitive bid for WrestleMania, given our strong international tourism brand, proven track record in hosting major events, and global reputation as a welcoming destination.”
Ireland Would Need At Least $6 Million To Host WrestleMania
However, as is now the case with all major WWE events, it all comes down to who has the highest bid. Fightful adds that Ireland would need to at least match the $6 million sum that Las Vegas paid to host Mania in the city. This would not include other financial incentives that are given to WWE for the events.
If the bid was successful, it would bring in close to 300 million euros to the country’s economy.
Analysis – Is Irish Mania Actually Possible?
For better and worse, history has shown that just about anything can happen when it comes to WWE. However, as has been the case for years now, it all comes down to money. London has made it clear that they don’t need WWE and aren’t prepared to pay the extortionate sum. Is Ireland prepared to spend what is likely 8 figures to bring the show to its country?
There’s no question that Ireland Mania would be a serious contender for the highest-grossing and most attended event in the country’s history. Additionally, due to the magnitude of the event, prices could be charged at a premium, given that it would be the first time the show would be held in Europe. That being said, the weather remains an issue, especially as there is no protection inside Croke Park.
As much as the local government and fans may want it, unless Ireland can put in a monumental bid, this still feels like a long shot.
