John Cena Clarifies WWE Retirement Plans

John Cena gave further information into his retirement plans.

John Cena has provided further information on his plans to officially wrap up his WWE in-ring career.

Making an unannounced appearance at Money in the Bank, John Cena made the announcement to the Toronto crowd that he would be retiring imminently, stating that the 2025 Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber and WrestleMania would be his last as an in-ring competitor. However, contrary to what many may have believed, this is not where the journey will end.

Appearing at the post-show press conference, Cena gave further details of what fans can expect, stating that he intends to wrestle for the full year before all is said and done:

“Here’s where we give you some of the deets of the farewell tour. It’s not gonna end at WrestleMania [41]. WrestleMania will be my last WrestleMania. But hopefully, if everything goes according to plan, we’re going straight through from January to December. We’re gonna try to go a long list of dates. I think right now tentatively, it’s hovering in the mid-30s to 40s, because I’m still gonna try to juggle a lot of stuff that’s going on. That will be the end of my in-ring completion.

Now, part of this business plan that I proposed and I proposed, thank you, they, was me remaining in the WWE family in some capacity for an extended time to come. I’ve always said to the audience that the WWE is my home, and I love it. Just because I physically I feel I’m at my end, doesn’t mean I need to distance myself from something I love. I have passion for this business. I still watch Money in the Bank and yell at the screen and yell at the guys for what they’re doing or what they could be doing, so I still, I feel I have some wisdom locked up here that could be of some value. So I look forward to ending my participation in the ring in the best way that I possibly can and being a member of the extended WWE family for quite some time to come,”

Also at the press conference, Cena stated that he is in no position to pick opponents and gave no further indication as to who could have that honour.

John Cena Has Been Open About Retirement

Very much involved in Hollywood and more than 20 years on from his in-ring debut, the 16-time World Champion has been open in multiple interviews about the fact that the final match would be occurring imminently. In a previous interview, Cena stated that he had a specific date in mind for the retirement match:

“I made a promise to the consumer early on, to WWE fans, ’cause I know how tough it is to be a fan. You gotta come out of pocket — and WWE has a ton of content — it takes a lot to be a passionate fan and our fanbase is passionate and global. I never wanted to go out there just for the sake of going out there. And I’m gonna be 47 this year. I feel great. So inside I feel great, but I know what it takes to be a WWE performer night in and night out and I don’t ever wanna just go out there and do it to do it. I wanna have the passion — the same passion as the fanbase — and I wanna give them exactly what they give me. The miles on the speedometer say, ‘Hey, that’s gotta be done before 50.’”

H/t to Fightful.
