Ilja Dragunov Leaving WWE

Ilja Dragunov Leaving WWE

Ilja Dragunov is the latest big name set to depart WWE in 2026.

First reported by Mike Johnson of PWInsider and later corroborated by Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful, Dragunov’s deal has expired and he will be exiting the promotion. His bio has also been moved to WWE’s alumni section, effectively confirming the departure.

Dragunov has been away from the ring since the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal on the April 17, 2026 edition of SmackDown, the final show before WrestleMania weekend. The last time The Mad Dragon competed before that, he unsuccessfully challenged Carmelo Hayes for the US Championship.

The 32-year-old signed with WWE in early 2019 as part of the NXT UK brand. He made his WWE main roster debut after WrestleMania in 2024, defeating Shinsuke Nakamura in his first match on Raw.

Dragunov held the NXT UK, NXT and US Championships during his time in the company. His departure follows the likes of Sheamus and The New Day, who all elected to explore other opportunities.

Analysis – Ilja Dragunov Leaves WWE

While it is disappointing to see Dragunov make his exit from the company, few will be surprised by the news. The former US Champion has been underutilised on the main roster ever since he dropped the title to Sami Zayn. One of the stiffest strikers in wrestling today, there was definitely the possibility that WWE could have ran back the rivalry with Gunther given their hard-hitting matches in NXT UK and main NXT. Dragunov was one of the select few who was able to pick up a win over The Ring General, and this feud deserved a place on a grander stage.

While it is unknown what is next for Dragunov, it’s hard to believe The Mad Dragon will be short on work. His style would work great in Japan, and naturally the UK and European independents will be interested.

If any promoters are reading this and have the funds, book Sheamus vs. Dragunov soon!
