A WWE Championship match and more are set for the August 21 SmackDown, which will air live from the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Canada.
After 17 months away, Kevin Owens made his return to the ring at SummerSlam. Victorious in a 4-way match against Finn Balor, Gunther and Sami Zayn, KO became the new number one contender to the WWE Championship, which is currently held by CM Punk. Wanting the hometown advanatge, Owens told Nick Aldis that he wanted his title match to take place in Canada, which Aldis agreed to. Both men made it clear that this was about more than just the title on last week’s show, with KO having years of resentment over Punk for how he was previously treated.
While not announced, it is also likely that Canada’s own WWE Women’s Champion Chelsea Green will appear live. Green was nearly stripped of her title due to injury on last week’s show, but Nick Aldis had a change of heart. Instead, Green has been given 30 days to defend her championship, or she will be forced to relinquish it.
Blake Monroe will also make her in-ring debut on the show as she will take on Giulia.
It should also be noted that Hall of Famer Trish Stratus will be in town, but has not been advertised for the show. Stratus will be appearing live for the latest stop on her First Crush tour, which will be hosted by Chris Van Vliet.
