An impromptu title match, a debut and more took place on the September 4 edition of WWE SmackDown.
Continuing to be a fighting champion CM Punk offered Johnny Gargano a shot at the WWE Championship on the show. This finally led to Gargano getting out of his depressed state, as he faced Punk for the gold in the main event. Additionally, Shinsuke Nakamura and a debuting Kyoki [former NJPW star Hiromu Takahashi] teamed up to take on The Miz and Kit Wilson. For Kyoki, this was his WWE debut.
This was also the final show before Sunday Night’s Main Event, which will see Cody Rhodes go one-on-one with Randy Orton and the in-ring debut of rapper Lil Yachty. Rhodes and Orton both appeared live on SmackDown.
The show was taped ahead of time, meaning that spoilers were in effect for the show. WWE SmackDown will return to live broadcasting with a show in Mexico on September 11.
