A title match and more has been announced for the September 19 episode of WWE SmackDown.
On the September 12 edition of the show, United States Champion Sami Zayn successfully retained the title over Rey Fenix in what was the second match in the US Open Challenge series. Later in the show, Carmelo Hayes spoke with Zayn backstage and requested to be next in line for a shot, which was agreed to by the champion. However, Hayes’ tag team partner The Miz was also seen frustrated that he was not given the opportunity first and that Hayes looked to be distracted from their goal of becoming Tag Team Champions.
With Wrestlepalooza set to take place the following night, the show will heavily focus on the upcoming Premium Live Event that will kick off the ESPN streaming era in the United States. Ahead of the show, Brock Lesnar is set to appear live once more ahead of his match with John Cena, who has not been advertised to appear. Additionally, WWE Champion Cody Rhodes will appear live ahead of his own title defence against Drew McIntyre at the PLE.
