Will Ospreay has admitted that there were discussions to have his AEW All In match follow a different path.
After winning the Owen Hart tournament at Forbidden Door, Ospreay booked his place in the main event of the Wembley Stadium show, where he will challenge for the World Championship. Although MJF was the World Champion at that point, Kenny Omega went on to defeat MJF and win the World Championship for a second time.
Although Ospreay and Omega have history with one another and one win apiece, there could have been other options for the Ospreay match. The Essex native has history with MJF, and it was Jon Moxley who caused the storyline injury that wrote him off TV.
While speaking with Scott Fishman of TV Insider, Ospreay was asked if the Wembley match could have gone in a different direction. Ospreay confirmed that while there were conversations, the Omega match felt like the most natural choice:
There were definitely discussions that it could go into different directions. But I feel like the natural and the right choice was to go with myself and Kenny because we’ve been preaching to the world that this is where the best wrestle. Myself and Kenny are two of the most influential wrestlers in the last decade. I’ve seen it in terms of our matches, and in terms of, like, the people that have followed in our footsteps. I can see guys like Callum Newman and Nick Wayne. People who took inspiration from Kenny.
Will Ospreay Compares His AEW All In Event To Past Matches
Ospreay also spoke about how this All In main event compares to previous headline matches. Where the MJF vs. Adam Cole match was more comedy, and the Adam Page vs. Jon Moxley match was about revenge, this will be two of the best looking to prove who is the better man:
To be able to put on an All In main event like that. You look at all the All In main events. You look at the MJF and Adam Cole match. That was kind of more humorous leading in than a sporting contest. It was more to engage the audience a certain way rather than a full sports contest. It served its purpose. Then it was the crowning of the greatest wrestlers who ever did it, Bryan Danielson against Swerve Strickland, and the story that they told there. Then it was the guts and the drive from Hangman Page to try and strip away Moxley’s briefcase to reveal the AEW World Championship. This match, to me, two of the greatest wrestlers of this generation going head-to-head and finally finding out which one is the best.
Omega won the first match between the two when he defeated Will Ospreay at Wrestle Kingdom to capture the IWGP US Championship. Ospreay won the rematch at AEW Forbidden Door later that year.
