Despite what the fans have been chanting for and the online speculation, Edge will not be making another shock return to WWE to face John Cena one more time.
Now that Cena has just 2 matches left as part of his 2025 retirement tour, all eyes are on Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13, which is where the 17-time World Champion will step into the ring for the last time. Given the magnitude of the upcoming match, fans are expecting Cena’s final opponent to be a major star, likely from his past. However, as Cena has already faced AJ Styles, Randy Orton, Brock Lesnar and CM Punk as part of his farewell tour, one of the names left on the list is one of his greatest rivals Edge, who is currently signed to AEW and is competing under his real name of Adam Copeland. However, despite the fact that Copeland is part of another promotion, some believe that this may soon change.
Along with fans chanting “We want Edge” at the Crown Jewel post-show, which Triple H ignored, Cope recently stated that he was taking time away following All Out. With the AEW star first signing his contract back in October 2023, rumours began to circulate that The Rated R Superstar’s contract could be coming to an end, opening the door to a WWE return. However, while some fans are hopeful that Edge vs. Cena could take place one final time, it won’t be happening.
John Cena vs. Edge “Can’t Happen”
Addressing the speculation on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer explained that Cope is still under contract with AEW, adding that the time away is part of his acting commitments:
“When Adam Copeland, a couple weeks ago, did the thing where he said he was going home, all of a sudden, people were like, ‘He’s going to be John Cena’s last opponent,’ which, of course, that’s not the case. Can’t happen. He’s under contract. […] He’s doing a movie and TV or whatever he’s doing that sets that, makes him gone for a little while.”
While the project that Copeland has taken time away from has not been confirmed, the AEW star was recently announced as being part of the cast for the upcoming Jason Statham movie The Beekeeper 2.
