It appears that WWE has made the decision on who will receive the honour of being the final opponent for John Cena.
With just 5 appearances and 3 matches left for the Hollywood star, fans are well aware that the final match is fast approaching. Given that Cena has already won his record-breaking 17th World Championship, and has previously faced former rivals including Brock Lesnar, CM Punk and Randy Orton, the last opponent is unlikely to be the reigning World Champion or a past foe. According to a new update, Cena’s last opponent will be in a first-time-ever match, and possibly his greatest test.
As reported by Dave Meltzer, Gunther will have the honour of facing Cena in his retirement match. It is also noted that a tournament is set to take place to determine Cena’s final opponent, which will be won by The Ring General when all is said and done.
“Multiple sources over the last two days have confirmed the name and the WWE internal listing for the Saturday Night Main Event at this point lists that as the only match on the show,” Meltzer wrote. “Two sources have confirmed that the latest plan is for a tournament to be announced, possibly on the air by Paul Levesque, with top wrestlers vying to be Cena’s last opponent. But multiple have confirmed however it reaches the conclusion, that Gunther was the person chosen for the match.”
When Will John Cena Face His Final WWE Opponent?
It has now been confirmed that Cena will step into the ring one final time on December 13 at the final Saturday Night’s Main Event special of the year, meaning that Cena will join Goldberg in being a legend to retire on the NBC special as opposed to at a Premium Live Event. The other 2 matches on the farewell tour will see Cena face AJ Styles at Crown Jewel on October 11, and a match at Survivor Series on November 29 to be determined.
