Does Tony Khan see a joint AEW and WWE show taking place anytime in the future?
One of the more surprising developments over the course of 2024 is the amount of contracted WWE stars being booked for matches outside of the company. Beginning with Shayna Baszler and Charlie Dempsey competing in Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport over WrestleMania weekend, more and more stars have been announced over the course of the year for international shows such as AJ Styles competing in Pro Wrestling NOAH and Iyo Sky competing in Marigold.
The outside appearances show no signs of slowing down with Grayson Waller recently announced for a return match in the Australian promotion PWA, where he competed before signing with WWE. In addition to all the international appearances, NXT stars have continued to make appearances in TNA on episodes of Impact.
In the past 5 years, AEW has been very open to collaboration, especially with New Japan and later Stardom and CMLL. However, due to the potential for some massive dream matches, an AEW and WWE Supercard is the one that fans are the most intrigued by. While many may wish for it, Khan has effectively told fans to not hold their breath.
Appearing on Maggie & Perloff, Khan said it may happen, just not in this century:
“I can’t say ever. Anything could happen at some point. It’s hard to say. What’s the timeline? In the next 100 years, quite possibly,”
When asked about 5 years time, Khan was less optimistic:
“That seems far less likely.”
Tony Khan Believes Things Are Looking Bright In AEW
AEW’s media rights continue to be a major talking point in 2024 as nothing has been officially announced at the time of writing. While Khan did not provide an official confirmation, he is extremely optimistic about the future:
“I didn’t bring my sunglasses to the Sirius studio today, but the future is so bright, I need them. The future is that bright. I know there have been a lot of reports. I have not done any of the leaking. With all due respect to the fine people at the Puck establishment and the Puck people, I didn’t talk to them. I know they have been reporting things that are very interesting. There are a lot of reports and rumors. I have not confirmed, and Warner Brothers have not confirmed anything officially. We have a really exciting future there. I can say with 100% certainty, AEW and TBS and TNT are here to stay for a long time.”
