The WWE return of AJ Lee looks to be all but confirmed, and more information has been provided on the plans for the former Divas Champion.
At Clash in Paris, CM Punk failed to win the World Heavyweight Championship from Seth Rollins thanks to interference from fellow WWE star and Rollins’ wife, Becky Lynch. On the fallout episode of Raw the following night on September 1, Punk called out Rollins in the hope of getting revenge, but instead came face to face with Lynch. After a war of words with both trading insults, Lynch repeatedly slapped Punk until Punk walked away. Later in the night, Punk heavily implied to Raw General Manager Adam Pearce that he would be at the SmackDown taping in his hometown of Chicago on September 5.
With Punk in need of an ally to fight Rollins and Lynch, the rumour mill has gone into overdrive that Punk’s wife and former WWE star AJ Lee could be set to make her return after a decade away from the ring. According to an update from Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select, the appearance may not just be a one-off.
The report notes that there have been a number of pitches internally for Lee to make her return, with it being heavily implied that she would be referenced or appear live on the next episode of SmackDown. Furthermore, it is noted that WWE hopes that they can do more with Lee, but are happy if the former Divas Champion only appears for the one-and-done match.
In regard to the talent reaction, a number of women’s wrestlers are very excited about the prospect of Lee returning as they grew up watching her.

Making her main roster debut in 2011, Lee went on to become one of the top stars in the division with 3 reigns as Divas Champion, one of which lasted 295 days. Following her exit, Lee has pursued acting roles and her memoir Crazy Is My Superpower: How I Triumphed by Breaking Bones, Breaking Hearts, and Breaking the Rules was published in 2017.
Lee’s final WWE match took place on the March 30 2015 episode of Raw, where she teamed with Paige and Naomi to defeat Natalya and The Bella Twins. Lee has not had another match since then, but did work with WOW (Women of Wrestling) from 2021 to 2023.
