The Street Fighter movie has been a big hit at cinemas as it is the number one movie following its opening weekend.
The adaptation sees multiple wrestlers as part of the cast, with Cody Rhodes as Guile, Roman Reigns as Akuma and NJPW’s Hirooki Goto as E. Honda. As reported by Deadline, the movie based on the video game made an estimated $51.1 million worldwide during its opening weekend, including $31 million in the United States and Canada and another $20.1 million internationally. This is a significant improvement on the previous adaptation starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, which drew just $6.8 million on opening weekend.
While Deadline also reports that the movie was projected to earn around $70 million in its opening weekend, there is belief internally that Street Fighter will have no issues surpassing its $82 million budget.
The lower-than-expected box office is projected to older fans going to see the video game adaptation as opposed to the whole family. It is noted that Street Fighter is a game more associated with the Gen X generation. Stars including Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns have been on extensive media tours to promote the movie. Reigns was first reported to be a part of the movie back in May 2025.
There is also strong competition with the Disney-produced thriller Whalefall.
Critics Don’t See Street Fighter As A Smash Hit
Although fans have been happy with Street Fighter and the project has been a success financially, the critics saw things differently. The movie currently has a 42% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 101 critical reviews. However, the audience score is much more positive with a score of 79%.
