Billy Gunn has looked back on and given his thoughts on one of the most infamous days in AEW history.
Following the end of All Out 2022, CM Punk appeared at the post-show press conference. Venting his frustrations from the past few weeks, Punk called out The Young Bucks, Colt Cabana and Adam Page while eating muffins in front of the media.
After saying in the press conference that if anyone had a problem with his comments, then they should find him, a backstage altercation reportedly ensued. Those involved were Punk, Ace Steel, The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega. Both sides never reconciled before Punk was terminated by AEW following All In 2023.
“There Are Veterans That Won’t Put Up With That Sh*t” Billy Gunn On AEW Incident
Speaking with Kenny McIntosh at an Inside The Ropes live show, Gunn first stated that he wasn’t there when the incident happened, nor is he interested in the media scrums. Gunn did acknowledge that some veterans would not put up with certain behaviour:
“I wasn’t around for that and I don’t watch any of that media stuff. I knew the incident that happened, and it was what it was. They just have to realise that sometimes, there are certain veterans that aren’t going to put up with that sh*t, no matter what. If you’re a young buckaroo and you want to poke the bear, get ready to get bit. I think that’s what happened. I don’t know the whole details; that’s between them. Of course the media thing that I don’t watch, because I got nothing to do with that either.”
The AEW star was then asked about how things were handled during his time in WWE. Gunn recalled former Chairman Vince McMahon having firm control over the roster to prevent these things from happening. Gunn also stated that “grown-ass people” would sort out their problems then and there, behind closed doors:
“Vince [McMahon] had things under control really good. I don’t have to like you to wrestle with you. I just have to do business. 99.9% of the guys always do that. There will be a spat every now and then where you just pull them into a room, shut the door, and you don’t do it in public, and I don’t do it in front of the boys. You pull them into a room, you shut the door and alright, here we go.”
If you have a problem, we fix it now, so that when you walk out the door, we don’t have a problem anymore. That’s how grown-ass people deal with sh*t. Nowadays, we don’t, and that’s sad. But there’s gonna be people who are gonna do that.”
Billy Gunn previously won the AEW Trios Championships with The Acclaimed.
