Nick Aldis cost Gunther his opportunity at the WWE Championship, getting payback after being assaulted by The Ring General.
The final match to take place at Saturday Night’s Main Event, which aired live from Madison Square Garden, saw Gunther and Sami Zayn face Cody Rhodes and WWE Champion CM Punk. If Punk and Rhodes won, their title match would remain a one-on-one contest. However, if Gunther and Zayn won, they would be added to the title match, making it a fatal 4-way.
The closing moments of the match saw Gunther strike Rhodes with the WWE Championship and follow up with a powerbomb. As the referee counted the pin, Aldis dragged the official out of the ring. The SmackDown GM then struck Gunther with the gold, allowing Punk to capitalise. Punk hit Gunther with the GTS and dragged Rhodes on top of The Ring General to win the match. Punk and Rhodes celebrated after the match as their SummerSlam main event remains unchanged.
Nick Aldis Gets Payback On Gunther
Gunther has had issues with Aldis for weeks. The former World Champion first took issue with the Night of Champions main event, where Sami Zayn won the WWE Championship. Following a war of words, things got physical and Aldis was removed from his position as SmackDown General Manager. Making his return on the July 10 SmackDown, Aldis announced the WWE Championship match for SummerSlam, but without Gunther.
Despite being intimidated by Gunther, Aldis refused to make the match a triple threat. As a result, Gunther locked in the sleeper and choked Aldis out.
