Kenny Omega has spoken out on the use of celebrities in wrestling and how he expects Mr. Beast to one day main event WrestleMania against another notable star from the world of YouTube.
While the use of mainstream athletes, actors and musicians is nothing new in wrestling as it was a major part of the first WrestleMania, there has been a notable shift in the past few years. With more of a focus on influencers and YouTube stars being featured in pop culture and in the entertainment world, this has also been reflected in wrestling. Along with Logan Paul being regularly featured on WWE programming and having previously won the United States Championship in the company, YouTuber IShowSpeed recently entered the Men’s Royal Rumble and went viral after being speared by Bron Breakker.
While some understand the use of influencers in wrestling given their outside appeal and the possibility of drawing more fans to the product, others have taken issue with the fact that it takes away a spot from a full-time wrestler and is a fast track to a spot that takes years to achieve.
Kenny Omega Anticipates All-Celebrity WrestleMania Main Event
Speaking with Adi Shankar, Omega addressed the issue and jokingly commented that a match between Logan Paul and Mr. Beast looks to be a possibility soon given their popularity:
“I’ve said it before, I don’t think — I don’t know if I’ve ever said it publicly or not, but I mean, I think we’re headed on a path where it’s like, a couple of WrestleManias down the road, the main event’s gonna be Logan Paul vs. Mr. Beast. It’s like, what is the wrestling acumen? How many miles have they put into it? It’s like, does it matter? This is process of evolution.”
One of the biggest stars on YouTube, Mr. Beast, real name Jimmy Donaldson, has 349 million subscribers on YouTube, approximately triple the amount WWE has. Paul has regulary featured on Mr. Beast’s videos.
