Gunther Wins World Heavyweight Championship At WWE SummerSlam

Gunther

Gunther is the new World Heavyweight Champion, winning the title for the first time in his career.

Victorious at SummerSlam, The Ring General defeated Damian Priest to become the top champion on the Raw brand and looks set to defend the title at Bash in Berlin in Germany later in the month.

The match itself saw Priest take control early before a number of hard-hitting strikes from The Ring General shifted the momentum. Another striking exchange between the two competitors took place later on which saw Gunther bleed from the chest. Priest looked to have had the match won at one point with the South of Heaven but the challenger kicked out.

Finn Balor made his way to ringside to rally Priest but was also taken out by the former Intercontinental Champion. Priest made his comeback and hit another South of Heaven and went for the pin but Balor put Gunther’s foot on the rope. Seeing the replay on the big screen, an irate Priest attempted to confront Balor before he was attacked and choked out by The Ring General to lose the match and the title.

The victory continues the strong run The Ring General has been on ever since he was called up to the main roster in 2022, which has seen multiple critically acclaimed matches take place and the longest Intercontinental Championship reign in the history of the title that came to an end at WrestleMania following a defeat to Sami Zayn. The title change marks the end of Priest’s time as champion at 118 days after The Judgment Day member successfully cashed in his Money in the Bank contract on Drew McIntyre at WrestleMania 40.

Gunther Capitalises On King Of The Ring Victory

Victorious over Randy Orton in the final of the King of the Ring tournament in Saudi Arabia, Gunther earned his opportunity to challenge whoever would be the World Champion at SummerSlam and became one of the firm favourites to win the title at The Biggest Party of the Summer.
