Gingerbread Man and Trick Williams on WWE TV

Many in WWE were against the Gingerbread Man angle that played out on SmackDown over the past few weeks.

After Sami Zayn attacked the Gingerbread Man costume on the May 1 SmackDown, it was announced on commentary that a “funeral” would be held for the character next week. As reported by WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Selectmultiple members of the creative team pushed back on the Gingerbread Man gimmick. One source in the company called it “hokey and archaic.”

It was also noted that the notable pushback came when the storyline was being discussed.

Gingerbread Man Angle Ends Before WWE Backlash Title Match

The storyline began to progress the United States Championship match between then-champion Sami Zayn and challenger Trick Williams. After Williams called Zayn a Gingerbread Man on SmackDown, the character was introduced the following week. Accompanying Williams and Lil Yachty to the ring, the Gingerbread Man became more of a focal point in the championship story.

At WrestleMania 42, Williams defeated Zayn to capture the US Title, his first main roster championship. On the next episode of SmackDown, Williams, Yachty and the Gingerbread Man celebrated the victory. However, with Zayn inside the costume, the former champion crashed the party and attacked Williams. With a rematch confirmed for Backlash, Zayn “killed off” the Gingerbread man, seemingly bringing the angle to an end.
