WWE star Dominik Mysterio has given more insight into his recent injury-led storyline on TV, admitting that it was legitimate.
Intercontinental Champion Mysterio was originally set to put his title on the line against AJ Styles at Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia back in June. However, after Mysterio stated he was injured on Raw and produced a doctor’s note, the match was pulled from the card and postponed indefinitely. What followed over the next few weeks was a series of skits featuring Styles and Mysterio, which saw The Phenomenal One humorously remind Mysterio at every opportunity that he was still waiting for that title match.
Eventually, Mysterio was given the all-clear, leading to a match between the 2 at SummerSlam in August. However, according to the Raw star, the injury was real and caused the match to be delayed.
Appearing on the Club 520 podcast, the Intercontinental Champion stated that he dislocated 2 ribs, confirming he was hurt:
“I dislocated my two lower ribs and they were digging into my cartilage. So that was why I was actually hurt. Everyone thought I was faking it, but I was actually hurt.”
Mysterio added that this was not the first time he was injured, as he cracked a rib and punctured a lung in a match against Edge shortly after his heel turn at Clash at the Castle:
“And then my first match as a bad guy, I wrestled Edge and I did a frog splash and I cracked my rib and it punctured a lung. And then I finished the match and then I just remember not being able to catch my breath and I told the doctor I was like, ‘No, no, I’m good.’ Went back to the locker room, ten minutes later, I was like, “I still can’t breathe.” I was like, “This ain’t right.” Sure enough, went to the hospital and they’re like, “Yeah, you got a pneumothorax. You can’t fly home.’”
Dominik Mysterio Still Intercontinental Champion Following Victory At WWE SummerSlam
As previously mentioned, Mysterio and Styles faced off at SummerSlam, competing on night 2 of the show on August 3. In the only match of the night where a DQ could have happened, Mysterio and Styles each paid tribute to Eddie Guerrero with their own comedy spots. In the end, Mysterio used his boot as a weapon while the referee was distracted to pick up the victory and remain the champion.
