A Dark Side of the Ring episode on one of the worst pro wrestling shows in history was almost made for VICE TV.
The wrestling docuseries has become a must-watch for fans due to its deep dive on some of the most controversial figures, matches and events in the history of the industry. From the Chris Benoit tragedy to the Plane Ride from Hell and WCW Bash at the Beach 2000, fans have heard previously untold stories on topics that have become folklore.
Now in its seventh season, many of the biggest topics have been covered. However, some of the most requested stories are still yet to be shot.
In October 1999, the independent show Heroes of Wrestling took place. Although the event featured many big names in wrestling such as Yokozuna, Jake Roberts, and Jim Neidhart, the show is not remembered for the right reasons. Along with Luke Williams and Butch Miller facing The Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff being blasted by critics as the worst wrestling match of all time, Roberts was in no fit state to compete. Roberts was incredibly intoxicated for his match, and struggled to cut a promo beforehand.
Heroes Of Wrestling Dark Side Of The Ring Episode Was Close To Being Made
Speaking with Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful, Dark Side of the Ring creator Evan Husney stated that Heroes of Wrestling has been a show that has been heavily requested by fans. Husney added that the team was close to covering it, but a major name was unable to be a part of it:
“I’ll say about Heroes of Wrestling, because that’s another one that always comes up. I’ll say that we were like that close to doing it, I think last year we were going to do it and we had like everybody lined up and just like the sort of linchpin character fell through. I don’t feel like rolling the dice that it’s gonna be what it should be. But we had some people who had worked behind the scenes on the show who had wild stories. Never say never though, it could rear its head around at another time. But that one we were very close on and it was too bad because that would be a good one. But obviously it does make a lot of people not look very good too at the same time.”
