Cody Rhodes Wins Back WWE Championship From John Cena At SummerSlam

Cody Rhodes is back on top of the WWE Roster following his victory over John Cena at SummerSlam.

Competing in the main event of SummerSlam night 2 on August 4, The American Nightmare defeated the 17-time World Champion in a street fight to win the title for a second time. The closing moments of the match saw Rhodes hit an avalanche Cody Cuttter followed by the Cross Rhodes to emerge victorious in front of more than 60,000 fans inside MetLife Stadium. The contest also saw big move after big move throughout with both men surviving the assault. Additionally, at one point Cena threw the title to the ground instead of using it as a weapon, confirming that his teased face turn on the go-home SmackDown was legitimate.

After the match, both men embraced with Cena left in the ring to soak in the “Thank you Cena” chants from the New Jersey crowd. However, Cena’s night ended in shocking fashion as a returning Brock Lesnar shocked the world by laying out the former WWE Champion to close out the show.

Rhodes’ victory brings to an end Cena’s reign at 105 days and also begins Rhodes’ second reign with the top prize in the company. Rhodes famously won the title in the main event of WrestleMania 40, pinning Roman Reigns in the Bloodline Rules match.

Rhodes and Cena previously faced off in the main event of WrestleMania 41 night 2, which saw the Hollywood star take advantage of a Travis Scott distraction to win the title for a record-breaking 17th time. Prior to the match, Cena famously turned heel at Elimination Chamber after receiving the call from The Rock. On the go-home episode of SmackDown, Cena cut an emotional promo stating that he did not want the fans to forget him, seemingly turning babyface in the process.
