Clarificaton On Ending To John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar Match At WWE Wrestlepalooza

Despite what was reported earlier in the week, Brock Lesnar was always set to stand tall over John Cena in their match at WWE Wrestlepalooza.

The two veterans competed in their latest, and possibly final, match against one another at the Premium Live Event on September 20. While some were hoping to see another Super Cena performance to give the Indianapolis fans a feel-good moment to kick off the show, what transpired was the complete opposite.

Despite a brief flurry of offence from Cena, Lesnar effectively squashed the Hollywood star and won the match after hitting multiple F5s. After the final bell rang, the camera cut to multiple shots of upset fans in the crowd, with kids distraught that Cena was dominated by the returning star.

In the days that followed, there were rumours that Cena was originally set to win the match against one of his most powerful rivals. However, as reported by Dave Meltzer in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletterthere was never any serious consideration to have Lesnar lose his first match back in more than 2 years:

“We were told that was not the case, and that Lesnar was not brought back to lose his first match. There are always discussions and the idea may have been broached for Cena to win, as most expected, but it was never a serious discussion or ever the planned finish,” Meltzer wrote.

“The match was all about making Lesnar as strong as possible, getting a last match with Cena, and the feeling Cena more than anyone, is bullet proof no matter what they do with him. They are spending a ton to get Lesnar and the idea is to make him a monster and have someone slay the monster. It would be more valuable saving the big and first Lesnar loss for Jacob Fatu or Bron Breakker, unless Cody Rhodes needs a challenger and if they feud, in the end, Rhodes does have to get a win.”

What’s Next For Brock Lesnar And John Cena In WWE?

Although it remains unknown what the immediate future holds for Brock Lesnar, Cena’s next match has already been set. Following a back and forth between himself and AJ Styles on social media, the match was made official for the 2 former WWE Champions at Crown Jewel on October 11.
