AEW Looking To Unify Championships

There could be fewer championships in AEW in the near future as there has been talk of title unification.

There could be fewer championships in AEW in the near future.

At the end of 2023, Eddie Kingston was presented with the Continental Championship after emerging victorious as the first ever winner of the Continental Classic Tournament. While the fans were happy with Kingston for emerging the victor, the addition of yet another championship in All Elite Wrestling was criticised as many felt that the championship scene is already bloated with 6 male and 2 female championships along with titles from ROH and NJPW also being defended at that point on AEW TV.

While the inclusion of other promotions’ championships has since become much more limited, there is still a feeling that there are still too many titles in the promotion. However, according to a recent report, this could be set to change.

As reported by Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Selectthe common fan theory of unifying the International Championship held by Kenny Omega and the Continental Championship held by Kazuchika Okada has been discussed internally with “firm creative plans” being considered. If this were to happen, it is unknown whether or not the titles would be carried together or rebranded as a new championship. It is also added that there has not been talk at this time of having another Okada vs. Omega match.

New Challenger For International Champion To Be Determined

Following on from Kenny Omega winning the International Championship at Revolution, a tournament began on the March 12th episode of Dynamite, which will see the winner become the new number one contender and face Omega at Dynasty on April 6th. Orange Cassidy and new signee “Speedball” Mike Bailey have both made it to the next round.
