The first challenger to the Interim AEW World Championship, which is currently held by Jon Moxley, was revealed on the July 1st episode of AEW Rampage.
The match took place on Rampage after the Blood and Guts Dynamite, meaning that the double ring setup was still in effect. The challenger was determined by a Royal Rampage match, which is a Battle Royale where the entrants arrive at set intervals, similar to the Royal Rumble match. Two Battle Royals would be taking place simultaneously, with the participants in each ring being as follows:
Ring 1 – Frankie Kazarian, John Silver, Orange Cassidy, Rush, Hangman Page, Konusuke Takeshita, Penta Oscuro, Powerhouse Hobbs, Ricky Starks and Keith Lee.
Ring 2 – In ring 2 was Darby Allin, Swerve Strickland, Dustin Rhodes, The Butcher, The Blade, Tony Nese, Matt Hardy, Max Caster, Brody King and Dante Martin.
The final two entrants in each respective ring were Brody King and Darby Allin. King would quickly enter the opposite ring and use the power advantage over Allin. Both men would go over the top rope to the apron, where King would place Darby in a sleeper hold, knocking Allin unconcious to win the match.
It should be noted that the result of the match was known ahead of time, as Rampage was pre-taped, meaning that those in attendance were able to provide the results to the matches that took place. It is currently unknown when King will face Mox for the title, which will be Jon Moxley’s first defence following the victory at Forbidden Door.
