A contract signing, Cody Rhodes and CM Punk face-to-face and more took place on the July 24 WWE SmackDown, the penultimate show before SummerSlam.
Following the events that took place at Saturday Night’s Main Event, it was made official that Nick Aldis and Gunther would face off at SummerSlam. The Ring General and the SmackDown General Manager met live in the ring to kick off the show and sign their SummerSlam contract.
Additionally, Cody Rhodes and CM Punk met live in the ring to address their issues. Both men have come close to blows in the past week leading up to SummerSlam. At SummerSlam, Punk will defend the WWE Championship against Rhodes.
Joe Tessitore and Wade Barrett were on commentary for the show.
WWE SmackDown Results July 24:
- Following a recap of the Gunther and Nick Aldis issues, both men appeared live for a contract signing to kick off the show. Aldis voluntarily relinquished his duties as SmackDown General Manager to sign the contract. Gunther mocked Aldis for never making it in WWE. Aldis retorted that Gunther has everything to lose in this, adding that Gunther never expected for it to come to this. A brawl ensued with Gunther giving Aldis a low blow and powerbombing him through the table.
- Sami Zayn interrupted a backstage segment and protested that he was riding the bench at SummerSlam. Zaynw as told that he would be in a number one contenders match at SummerSlam.
- Brie Bella defeated Lainey Reid. Fatal Influence attacked Brie after the match until Nikki made the save. A six woman tag match was announced for SummerSlam.
- Chelsea Green defeated Kiana James to qualify for the interim Women’s Championship ladder match.
- Cody Rhodes and CM Punk appeared live. Punk said that he didn’t want the title to come between their friendship, but admitted things are past that. Rhodes said that he respects Punk, but doesn’t like him.
- Charlotte Flair defeated Nia Jax to qualify for the interim Women’s Championship ladder match. Jade Cargill attacked Flair to give Flair the DQ win.
- Finn Balor defeated Royce Keys, Trick Williams and Damian Priest. Balor will face Sami Zayn in a number one contenders match at SummerSlam.
Also on July 24, NXT hosted a live event in Fort Pierce, Florida.
