The big events of SummerSlam weekend were addressed and more on the August 7 edition of WWE SmackDown.
A newsworthy SummerSlam saw Randy Orton return to WWE. The Viper attacked Cody Rhodes, allowing CM Punk to retain the WWE Championship in the process. Rhodes looked for revenge on Orton on the show. Additionally, Chelsea Green became the Interim Women’s Champion by unhooking the title in a ladder match. Green celebrated her big win on the show.
New US Champion Baron Corbin also appeared live to celebrate his victory.
Joe Tessitore and Wade Barrett were on commentary for the show.
WWE SmackDown Results August 7:
- Cody Rhodes officially kicked off the show in Philadelphia. Punk spoke about being attacked by Randy Orton before being interrupted by CM Punk. Punk said he had no idea about Randy Orton making his return. Punk pitched that he and Rhodes go and find Orton together, but Rhodes said he would do it himself. Rhodes left but then Kevin Owens’ music played. Both men had some words off mic, and Nick Aldis attempted to calm things down. Both remained calm as Owens said that he proved people wrong by coming back. Owens said that Punk was an arrogant sociopath for looking past him. Owens said that the only thing better than winning the championship was beating CM Punk to win the title. Punk claimed Owens was scared, adding that without him he wouldn’t be in WWE. Owens retorted that he’s glad he’s not like Punk.Owens also thanked Punk for not being “a miserable piece of sh*t” like him. Both men were separated by security.
- Baron Corbin defeated Trick Williams to retain the US Championship.
- Chelsea Green celebrated winning the Interim Women’s Championship at SummerSlam. Green was joined by Tiffany Stratton before Fatal Influence interrupted. Jacy Jayne wanted a shot at the Women’s US Title, but would only be granted it if Green and Stratton were given an opportunity at the Women’s Tag Titles.
- Fatal Influence defeated Chelsea Green and Tiffany Stratton to retain the Women’s Tag Titles.
- Randy Orton appeared live but was quickly interrupted by Cody Rhodes. Orton slid out of the ring. Rhodes said Orton owed him an explanation, but Orton wouldn’t give him one.
- Charlotte Flair defeated Jade Cargill. B-Fab and Michin attempted to interfere, but Alexa Bliss and Tatum Paxley, who was called up to the SmackDown roster, neutralised Cargill’s allies.
Also on August 7, WWE NXT hosted a live event in Melbourne, Florida.
