WWE SmackDown aired live from Glendale, Arizona on September 22nd. The show saw a title match and the build to Fastlane begin.
The following events took place on the show:
- John Cena opened the show, issuing a challenge to Soli Sikoa and Jimmy Uso. Cena revealed that he had a partner for the match, AJ Styles. Despite Cena and Styles being ready for a fight, Uso and Sikoa refused the challenge.
- Throughout the night, Adam Pearce attempted to make the match official. Eventually, the match was agreed to but not for SmackDown. Instead, the match was pitched for Fastlane.
- A recap of The Rock’s appearance caused an irate Austin Theory to protest the clip being replayed. It was later announced that Theory would team with Grayson Waller to take on Ridge Holland and Butch.
- Rey Mysterio and Santos Escobar defeated The Street Profits. After the match, an incensed Bobby Lashley demanded that The Profits get their act together.
- IYO SKY defeated Asuka to retain the WWE Women’s Championship.
- Austin Theory and Grayson Waller defeated Butch and Ridge Holland.
- Adam Pearce introduced John Cena for the contract signing segment for Fastlane. AJ Styles’ music played, but Styles was taken out backstage by Jimmy Uso and Solo Sikoa. Styles was loaded into an ambulance as Paul Heyman made his way to the ring. Sikoa and Uso joined Heyman and stated that this is what happens when you mess with The Bloodline. Cena rushed to the ring, but was taken out by The Bloodline to close out SmackDown.
