WWE SmackDown presented the final build to Payback on September 1st, and it also saw the return of John Cena to WWE.
The matches and segments for the show were as follows:
- John Cena opened the show. Cena thanked the fans for their loyalty before being interrupted by Jimmy Uso, who stated that Cena has been corrupted just like Roman Reigns. Cena responded that the wrong Uso quit and gave him an Attitude Adjustment.
- Grayson Waller and Austin Theory defeated Rey Mysterio and Santos Escobar after Waller hit a rolling Stunner on Escobar.
- The Street Profits and Bobby Lashley were in the ring to put everyone on notice. The trio came face-to-face with Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn as the Tag Team Champions made their entrance.
- Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn defeated Joaquin Wilde and Cruz Del Toro with Owens hitting a Stunner onto Del Toro, sending a warning to The Judgment Day after the bell.
- Jimmy Uso and AJ Styles had a heated confrontation backstage, with Styles being taken out by Solo Sikoa. Styles demanded a match with Sikoa, which was granted.
- The Miz and LA Knight met face-to-face in the ring to discuss their upcoming match at Payback and opposing career paths. Miz hit Knight with a Skull Crushing Finale and the brawl would escalate to the top of the ramp.
- Shotzi defeated Bayley. Charlotte Flair came to ringside an struck Bayley while the referee was distracted, allowing Shotzi to win.
- Solo Sikoa defeated AJ Styles. Paul Heyman came to ringside to watch the match. Jimmy Uso knocked Style off the top rope while the referee was distracted. Sikoa hit the Samoan Spike to pick up the victory. Sikoa looked to attack Jimmy Uso after the bell, but was stopped by Heyman. Uso hit a Superkick and Splash to Styles.
