William Regal has hit back at a claim about his AEW career after initially praising WWE NXT.
September 24th marked the end of an era for the black and gold brand as their 5-year run on the USA Network came to an end. From October 1st, the show will be broadcast on the CW Network in the United States.
Regal, who has been an integral part of the brand for a number of years both onscreen and behind the scenes, issued a statement on social media to reflect on his time working on the brand while thanking those who helped to build the brand into the success it is today:
I was part ( except for H’s family) part of the very beginning of @WWE’s @NXT. I’m still involved but not as much as I was. Thank you to H, Shaun, Matt and everyone else that fought the fight of making a one hour program on The WWE network to traveling the world and making new stars and memories for the fans. It continues today. Doesn’t matter what the colour scheme is or was, or has been, we changed the Wrestlng world although few will want to admit it. It’s been the best part of a 41 year career being @WWENXT to the core.
In recent months, multiple former AEW wrestlers have since made their way over to NXT an have signed on with the company. In reference to this, a fan responded to Regal’s initial quote claiming that he had “snaked out the competition” and accused Regal of being the one who made many of the jumps happen. In a lengthy response to this, Regal categorically denied this was the case:
FYI. Although it serves some people’s agenda, and having a massive amount of people who work in AEW that can only back me up, I went to AEW to help because Bryan Danielson asked me to. Please find me one person who can say otherwise. I arrived at 10 am until 6.15 pm ( est) to train anyone who wanted to come, apart from going to the rest room and refilling my water container, I never attended a single production meeting ( as I knew, if I were to stay there) I needed people to realize I was only there to help. Nor did I ask a single question about anybody that works there’s contract status. I helped at the ring with what any of the talent needed. I showered and got into a suit by 6.30 then watched he monitor with everyone else. I’m giving you the right to ask anyone who works backstage or talent the right to ask them if I did anything but help with no agenda. Feel free. I also didn’t call Tony when his Mom was ill. He called me and as soon as he told me where he was I ended the phone call and we spoke 2 weeks later. FYI, my deal was up in December ‘28. That’s when I left. These are all facts I can prove. Anyone trying to twist this has the right to check this out. I am friendly with 60% + of the talent and backstage crew. Feel free to do some real research.
Multiple current AEW employees such as Renee Paquette and QT Marshall have also supported Regal’s statement.
When Did William Regal Join AEW?
After being a part of one of the many rounds of WWE releases during the pandemic as part of “budget cuts”, Regal made his shock debut for AEW at Revoltuino 2022 following the match between Jon Moxley and Bryan Danielson. This would lead to the formation of The Blackpool Combat Club, a faction that paid homage to Regal’s routes and is still active today, albeit with a more vicious edge.
Regal betrayed Moxley at Full Gear to allow MJF to win the World Championship. Shortly after this, MJF attacked William Regal to write him offscreen as Regal had requested his release from AEW, which was granted under the condition that he did not appear on WWE TV for a year. The term was agreed to and Regal has since made a couple of appearances on NXT TV.
