Former WWE star Sonya Deville has elaborated on the reason why her alliance with Chelsea Green was not revisited when she returned from injury.
On the July 17, 2023 edition of Raw, Deville and Green defeated Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez to become the new Women’s Tag Team Champions, which was also both women’s first championship reigns in WWE. Unfortunately, Deville suffered a torn ACL shortly afterwards, meaning that she would be out of action until further notice.
While previous injuries have seen tag team titles vacated and new champions crowned shortly afterwards, Green instead took matters into her own hands. Beginning with the parody skits on social media titled Chelsea’s Got Talent, Green was nearly forced to relinquish the gold until Piper Niven stepped in and stated she would be Green’s partner, which WWE later sanctioned and recognised Niven as one-half of the champions.
Deville made her return to TV in May 2024, but did not reunite with Green or ever question her former partner’s decision to abandon her. According to Deville, the reason was simply due to WWE not wanting to revisit the storyline.
“They Didn’t Want To Go Back To It”: Sonya Deville On Scrapped Chelsea Green Storyline
Speaking with Chris Van Vliet, Deville stated that although she had a pitch to revisit the storyline, WWE instead had plans for the Pure Fusion Collective faction, which saw Deville join forces with Zoey Stark and Shayna Baszler:
“They just didn’t want to go back to it. They didn’t want to go back to it. I had pitched that it would be a natural angle to go after Piper and be like, ‘What the hell? Bitch, that’s my f*cking championship!’ Very natural angle. But they had this idea for this faction, and so that was where we were gonna go. I will say, while I was out, I did pitch coming back in my MMA gimmick, like a modified version, but I did pitch going back to my roots, and I think Triple H had the same kind of idea. He was like, Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. Let’s do this group. When he told me the group, I was like, Okay, interesting. I didn’t know how the three of us were going to blend together, me, Zoe and Shayna, in PFC. So I was open minded to it, and of course, whatever he wants. I saw myself more as the mouthpiece in that scenario and I was like, okay, but we couldn’t get our footing. And then we were given the name Pure Fusion Collective, and I thought that was terrible. I don’t think it was ever going to be the thing, but we tried to make it work.”
Deville left WWE in February 2025 when it was revealed that her contract would not be renewed.
