John Cena has elaborated on his plans to “ruin wrestling” for the WWE fans following his shock heel turn in 2025.
Just a couple of months into his retirement tour, Cena did the unthinkable when he turned into the bad guy for the first time in over 2 decades. After being given the signal by The Rock, Cena attacked Cody Rhodes as the wrestling world watched on at the unbelievable actions of the 17-time World Champion.
Appearing live for his first promo since the turn, Cena claimed that he was the victim of negative fans for over 20 years. Looking to win the WWE Championship and take it home with him, Cena made a vow to ruin wrestling forever.
Appearing on WWE Unreal Season 3 on Netflix, Cena elaborated on the intention of his promise and how it was designed to anger the fans:
“What does that mean to ruin wrestling? That means to take the fun away from the fans. That means to win that championship with methodical, catastrophically boring work. To make people like, ‘f*ck this guy.’ Everybody’s like, ‘that’s it? What a sh*tty main event.’ Yup, that’s what I was going for. Watch the next one.’, and then I was explaining like, ‘that was too boring, like, that was too bad, I think people are gonna stop coming.’ The perspective was, ‘hey, this isn’t heat on you, this is heat on the company.’”
Triple H Comments On John Cena Planning To “Ruin Wrestling” For WWE Fans
Chief Content Officer Paul Levesque [Triple H], also provided his perspective on the Cena heel turn as part of the docuseries. Levesque agreed with Cena’s instinct to a degree, but also acknowledged that it wasn’t working at one point:
“To some degree, John’s instinct was spot on. John earned the spot to be like, ‘okay, well let’s take a shot at it.’ But there was a certain point in time where I was like, ‘this ain’t working.’ You still got to deliver to these people. Hopefully you’ll do it in a manner in which they don’t like that. But you gotta give them your greatness still.”
In another interview, Cena spoke about the toughest match of his WWE career.
