Was Adam Cole Ever Going To Win The AEW World Championship?

Adam Cole has elaborated further on being a part of the AEW roster and if there ever were plans for him to become a World Champion in the company.

Back at All Out 2021, Cole made his AEW debut as one of many surprise appearances seen that night. Leaving on good terms with WWE and siding with The Elite, Cole had arrived in AEW and was about to begin the next phase of his professional wrestling career.

Fast forward to 3 years late and a lot has changed in the wrestling landscape. While 2021 saw many ex-WWE stars make the jump to the competition, the past 12 months have seen the reverse happen with the likes of Andrade, Ethan Page, Lexis King and Shawn Spears all leaving AEW. With the wrestling world remaining an unpredictable beast throughout 2024, could Cole be the next one to make the jump?

While appearing on the Stick To Wrestling podcast, Cole confirmed that not only would he be remaining All Elite for the foreseeable future but he also intends to end his career in the promotion:

Yes, yes (it is my goal to end my career in AEW). I believe so. Of course, like we say in pro wrestling, obviously never say never. You never know what’s gonna happen but I love AEW with all of my heart. I love our crew, I love our boss, I love our fans. I absolutely love it here and have no real plans of leaving.

Adam Cole discusses AEW World Title Plans

Throughout 2023, Cole entered a partnership with former rival MJF that saw the best friends win the ROH Tag Team Championships and headline the first-ever Wembley Stadium show. Unfortunately for Adam Cole, a serious injury suffered at Grand Slam that year caused his ankle to shatter, resulting in major surgery. Cole briefly appeared at the end of Worlds End shortly after MJF lost the World Title to reveal that he was the man behind The Devil mask, who had been terrorising MJF for months. It had been previously reported that if Cole had not gotten injured, he may have been the one to dethrone MJF. In the interview, Cole addressed this:

So, as you know in the world of professional wrestling, there are constantly different ideas being thrown around or changes constantly. So, do I know for sure that I was gonna be in line to becoming the AEW World Champion? I’m not totally sure but that’s certainly where it seemed like we were going. That’s certainly the direction that I think very possibly could have happened had I not been injured which really did add to the mental anguish of the entire process but again, there are constant roadblocks thrown our way all the time. We gotta adapt, we have to pivot, and I still have a lot of my wrestling career left so I certainly hope the AEW World Title is in my future in the future.
