CM Punk has credited a WWE Hall of Famer with a lengthy in-ring career as the reason he wants to keep going in the ring.
The reigning World Heavyweight Champion, 47, is aware that he is closer to the end of his time in the ring than ever before. On top of his 50s approaching fast, Punk has also dealt with a number of serious injuries throughout his career. With this in mind and the likes of John Cena and AJ Styles calling time on their own careers over the past few months, some fans believe that Punk could also be thinking about that final match. However, according to the Raw star, this won’t be anytime soon.
Speaking with Alistair McGeorge of Metro as part of the media promotion for the upcoming WWE 2K26 videogame, Punk noted that he is asked about retirement constantly, unlike the man who inspires him, Rey Mysterio:
‘[Rey’s] a guy that inspires me, because I feel like nobody’s asking him, “Oh, hey, when you’re gonna retire?” And I get it every other question, “Hey, when are you gonna retire?” It’s like, well, slow down!’
Continuing, Punk added that Mysterio is the one who motivates him to continue wrestling at this stage of his career:
‘Like I look at a guy like Rey and he’s timeless, and he inspires me to put my boots on and keep going.’
Regarded as one of the greatest luchadors and greatest wrestlers of all time in general, Mysterio made his in-ring debut back in 1989 and has showed no signs of wrapping things up anytime soon. Having achieved just about every accolade there is to accomplish in WWE, along with inspiring countless wrestlers, Mystero was recognised for his contributions with a Hall of Fame induction in 2023.
How Many Times Has CM Punk Wrestled WWE Hall Of Famer Rey Mysterio?
Including multi-man matches and non-television events, Punk and Mysterio have been in the ring together more than 100 times. Their first match took place back in 2002 for IWA, which saw both men compete in a triple threat match that also included Eddie Guerrero.
Some of the notable matches between Mysterio and Punk include a WrestleMania 26 match and a mask vs. hair match at Extreme Rules 2010. Both matches were won by Mysterio.
