The Undertaker has looked back on one of his Hell in Cell matches that is not held in as high regards as his classics despite the fact it was a great contest.
With 14 appearances inside the unforgiving structure, not every Undertaker Hell in a Cell match was an all-time great. While the earlier bouts with the likes of Shawn Michaels and Mick Foley will go down as some of the greatest of all time, his matches against Kane and The Big Boss Man inside the Cell are not likely to feature on any highlight reels anytime soon. Another match of his is also notably excluded, but more so for the brutality involved.
At No Mercy 2002, Undertaker faced off against Brock Lesnar in what was Lesnar’s first appearance inside the Cell. The extremely bloody match saw Undertaker and Lesnar bleed heavily with even Paul Heyman busted open in the violent encounter.
Recalling the match on his Six Feet Under podcast, Undertaker stated that the bloodshed was very much warranted and added that it is a cell match that is very underestimated:
“For that time period that match warranted that kind of blood. I don’t know if I had hurt something or whatnot, but I took some time off after the next TV. But yeah, working with Brock inside a cell is interesting too. I mean, because he’s so athletic, especially as that’s his first time in [the cell], and he was young and explosive.
He had good instincts, but he wasn’t nearly as polished as he was when he came back. I mean, his wrestling IQ and acuity was so much better when he came back. But what he didn’t have then he made up for in athleticism, raw strength, energy and just viciousness. He had those intangibles, it’s hard to teach people aggressiveness, and viciousness to be a killer. He had all that, just instinct. It’s a natural thing. It was ingrained in him.
To work against that character, that’s the American Badass version. But still, you had to have that, especially in Hell in a Cell. By this that time I had several Hell in a Cell matches, so he had to bring it and he did 100%. I think it’s underestimated, as far as when you start talking about Hell in a Cell matches. It epitomizes what Hell in the Cell was created for, two men in or one man leaves kind of deal. And that’s exactly what happened.”
The Undertaker Discusses WrestleMania Streak
On a previous episode of his podcast, the Hall of Famer discussed his legendary WrestleMania undefeated streak, which was broken by Lesnar at WrestleMania 30 in 2014. Addressing the streak coming to an end, The Undertaker admitted that he had someone else in mind who he wanted to be the one to bring it to an end.
