An update has been provided on the John Cena Classic, which is expected to be officially announced imminently.
Cena is set to appear live on the November 2 Raw. Hyping up his appearance on social media, Cena added that this would be where more details on the upcoming tournament would take place. As reported by WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select, there is an expectation that the “where, when and how” of the tournament will be revealed.
There have also been a significant number of meetings following the announcement to ensure that the Classic has a fresh look and feel compared to previous tournaments. Shawn Michaels and AJ Styles were also consulted on the tournament, something the company does not normally do when introducing new concepts.
In terms of how the Classic would be broadcast, WrestleVotes adds that there was a pitch to have the tournament take place on Club WWE, which is behind a paywall. However, a source has indicated that it will likely be streamed elsewhere to allow for a greater audience reach.
What Do We Know About The John Cena Classic?
Cena appeared at Backlash to announce the concept. Unlike previous wrestling tournaments that use the knockout or round robin format, the Classic is set to be structured differently. As part of his appearance, Cena stated that a fan vote could influence the decision, meaning that the person who does win the most matches could still be the big winner on the night.
No further information was provided regarding the number of competitors, how many weeks this would be held over, or which brands would be included.
