The John Cena Classic: What We Know

The John Cena Classic: What We Know

After first being announced back in May, more details on The John Cena Classic have been revealed.

Cena appeared live on the November 2 Raw to officially unveil details of the tournament after first teasing the concept at Backlash earlier in the year. While details have been limited in the weeks leading up to the official announcement, fans now know more information about what to expect.

Cena had three announcements on Raw: when and where it would take place, the first participant, and the grand prize.

What Is The John Cena Classic?

Initial details were revealed back at Backlash. Cena stated that he wanted to introduce a tournament that he was proud to put his name on. However, unlike traditional wrestling tournaments, the winner won’t necessarily be the one who wins the most matches. Instead, fan voting will take place, which will influence the overall winner.

Cena announced how voting would work during his Raw appearance. Voting for the winners will be via Club WWE, which is a paid subscription service. Fans currently have to pay $99 per year for the service.

When Will It Begin?

The tournament will start on December 14 and is set to air live from Disney World in Orlando, Florida. For the first time in history, two episodes of Raw will air on the same day. With the fallout episode of Wrestlepalooza set to air live from Perth, a second episode will take place later in the day. The second episode will mark the start of Classic.

What Is The Prize For The Winner Of The John Cena Classic?

Following the first announcement, Cena unveiled the John Cena Classic Championship, which will be awarded to the winner of the tournament. The title has a Cena salute silhouette in the centre, and shares some similarities to Cena’s spinner championship seen in the mid to late 2000s.

Who Is In The Tournament?

Currently, the only confirmed name for the Classic is Cody Rhodes. Cena introduced Rhodes as a participant to round out his series of announcements on the show. Cena said that he understands why Rhodes is QB 1 and promised there would be more appearances. As well as his upcoming NXT appearance, Cena will be on more TVs and at Survivor Series to ensure that the tournament line-up would be “absolutely stacked.”

It is currently unknown how many participants will be in the tournament.
