"The Biggest WrestleMania Miss": The Undertaker Addresses Missed Sting Match In WWE

The Undertaker has given his thoughts on never facing Sting in WWE and how it was a huge missed opportunity.

Sting vs. Undertaker has often been cited by fans as the number one dream match that never got to happen. While Sting famously stayed away from WWE following WCW’s closure in 2001, competing in TNA instead, The Icon and The Phenom were briefly in the same company at one point.

Asked about the match during a Q and A on his  Six Feet Under podcast, Undertaker claimed that Vince McMahon didn’t see the appeal in what was a “home run” opportunity:

“People had been clamoring for that match for a long time. It seemed like a no-brainer, why on earth would you not do that? For whatever reason, Vince didn’t see it, didn’t like it, didn’t want it. ‘This is a home run. This is an easy main event for a pay-per-view.’ I don’t really have an answer. I never really had an in-depth conversation with Vince about why he didn’t want to do it. He obviously knows more business than I do, but that one seemed like a home run and they decided to walk the guy instead of pitch to him. I don’t know what happened there.

Continuing, Undertaker added that he would have loved to have the match, but it wasn’t his decision. The Hall of Famer added that the match not taking place was the biggest miss in WrestleMania history:

“I don’t have any regrets because it wasn’t my decision. I would’ve loved to been able to have that match. It just wasn’t meant to be. Seemed like a no-brainer. Now, it’ll be discussed for the rest of time, ‘What if?’ I remember running into Sting after the WrestleMania we didn’t work, we were on the same plane together talking, and we were like, ‘I don’t know. This is beyond me. I don’t know why.’ That’s probably got to be the biggest miss for WrestleMania. Those two characters would’ve done some incredible business. Wasn’t me.”

When Could The Sting And Undertaker Match Have Taken Place?

Sting made his long-awaited WWE debut at Survivor Series 2014, attacking Team Authority to allow Team John Cena to win the main event. With this being the first time that both legends were in the same company since the early 90s, WrestleMania 31 would have been the ideal location for the dream match. Instead, Sting lost to Triple H at the 2015 show. Undertaker defeated Bray Wyatt at the event one year on from his loss to Brock Lesnar, which famously brought The Streak to an end.

Both men have since retired. Undertaker defeated AJ Styles at WrestleMania 36, which took place during the pandemic. Sting brought his career to an end at Revolution 2024, which saw him and Darby Allin defeat The Young Bucks. As well as remaining undefeated in AEW, Sting retired as one half of the Tag Team Champions.
