The Miz has admitted that he originally wanted to use a different song as his WWE theme.
The A-Lister has become synonymous with the Downstait song “I Came to Play”, which regularly plays in arenas on SmackDown each week. However, while some stars get their first choice for entrance music, others have had to compromise.
At SummerSlam, Nick Aldis made his long-awaited WWE debut against Gunther. To make the moment that much sweeter, the English star walked out to Oasis’ anthem “Morning Glory.” Following the match, Triple H revealed that this was a song that Aldis wanted to use, and the company was able to make it happen.
Speaking with the Battleground podcast over SummerSlam weekend, Miz was asked which band he would want to bring back for his own entrance theme. The former WWE Champion responded that he wanted a song by the band Hollywood Undead, but WWE said no. Instead, the band Downstait, who were unknown at that time, were the band that played Miz to the ring:
When I first wanted a theme song, I wanted ‘Undead’ by Hollywood Undead right when ‘Swan Songs’ came out. It was a brand-new song. Nobody really heard it yet. I like to find underground songs that no one else sees, and then they become popular. So I kind of found that. I gave them that and then that’s how ‘I Came to Play’ came to fruition. They’re like, ‘We can’t get that.’ Because back then, we didn’t get like Living Colour or Oasis. We had to get some band that was unknown which was Downstait. But now they’re very well known because everyone stole off me.
The Miz Still Uses Downstait As His WWE Theme
One of the few stars who has not undergone a change in entrance music over the past few years, Miz still uses “I Came to Play” by Downstait at WWE events. The band went on to write themes for the likes of Dolph Ziggler, Matt Cardona and Cody Rhodes. While the group were relatively unknown at this time, they have gained a following largely due to their WWE entrance themes.
