Sami Zayn Wins US Championship On SmackDown; Will Defend Title At WrestleMania 42

Sami Zayn booked his spot for WrestleMania 42 on the latest episode of SmackDown as he captured the United States Championship.

On the March 27 edition of the show, Zayn defeated Carmelo Hayes to win the title for the second time in his career. Zayn answered Hayes’ open challenge on the show and went on to win the match thanks to an assist from Tick Williams. Williams looked to strike Zayn while the referee was distracted, but took out Hayes instead. Zayn followed up with a Helluva Kick to win the match and the championship.

The victory brings to an end Hayes’ reign at 91 days. A fighting champion, Hayes repeatedly put the title on the line on SmackDown in open challenges, defeating the likes of Ilja Dragunov and TNA star Leon Slater while reigning with the gold.

Prior to the match, Zayn had been seen talking with General Manager Nick Aldis, as Zayn’s direction for WrestleMania seemed unclear at that point, leading to Zayn showing signs of frustration backstage.

Sami Zayn Match Announced For WrestleMania 42

Following the victory, Aldis announced that Zayn would be putting the US Championship on the line against Trick Williams at WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas in April. The match will be the first time that Williams has competed on The Grandest Stage.
