Ronda Rousey has detailed scrapped plans for a match against a former rival who is currently a champion in WWE.
Although Rousey shared the ring with the likes of Charlotte Flair, Alexa Bliss and close friend Shayna Baszler throughout her WWE tenure, there was one match everyone wanted to see. Following jabs in the ring and on social media, it appeared that a match between Rousey and Becky Lynch was on the horizon. However, while both women headlined WrestleMania 35 in a triple threat match that also featured Flair, the one-on-one encounter never happened.
Rousey returned for a second run in WWE in 2022, but a match with Lynch was never even hinted at. According to the former Women’s Champion, this was something she very much campaigned for.
“I Thought It Was F*cking Incredible”: Ronda Rousey On Pitched Rivalry With Multi-Time Women’s Champion Becky Lynch
Speaking with Zack Heydorn of The TakeDown on SI, Rousey detailed plans for a rivalry with Lynch, which the company seemed to be very receptive to:
“After WrestleMania, I literally printed out a whole presentation for them, for me and Becky — the singles match,” Rousey said. “How we would do it, how we would plan it out and rehearse these things and have them woven throughout the show. To do something really exceptional and new. And then Vince and them were like, ‘oh yeah, this is a great idea, this is great.’ Then I went and had my baby, I came back, and they were like, well, we talked about that a year ago.”
“They said, ‘We love this plan, it’s an epic showdown with you and Becky that’s going to build all year.’ I wanted to make basically a final showdown of me and Becky woven throughout the entirety of the show. It would summarize the entire rivalry for anyone watching it for the first time. Someone could watch it and not need to watch everything that came beforehand. It would sum it up and then deliver the ending. I thought it was f*cking incredible and it was why I came back.”
Rousey is set to make her MMA return against Gina Carano on May 16. The show will be broadcast on Netflix, marking the first time that the streaming service has broadcast MMA. Rousey has also stated that this will be her final MMA match. Her pro wrestling future remains undecided.
