Original Plans For Gunther At WWE Clash At The Castle

Guther was originally set to face a different opponent at WWE Clash at the Castle in Cardiff, Wales.

Gunther had one of the best matches of his career against Sheamus at WWE Clash at the Castle back in 2022, but that wasn’t always the plan for the show.

On September 3 of that year, Guther and Sheamus went to war over the Intercontinental Championship in Cardiff, Wales, as The Celtic Warrior looekd to win the title he needed to become a Grand Slam Champion. Despite his best efforts and a standing ovation after the match, which was very physical and unlike anything most WWE fans had seen at that point, Sheamus was unable to get the job done and is still looking for that IC Title reign to this day.

The match was very well received by fans with many believing it to be the match of the year in 2022. However, according to Sheamus, there was orignally set to be a different opponent for Gunther.

Speaking with Robert Jackman of UncrownedSheamus revealed that Gunther’s original opponent was Shinsuke Nakamura:

“The original plan was actually meant to be Gunther defending his title against Shinsuke Nakamura,” Sheamus said.

Sheamus is next set to be in action at the Clash in Paris Premium Live Event on August 31, where he will look to put his rivalry with Rusev to an end in a Donnybrook match.

When Will Gunther Return To WWE?

Gunther has not been seen on TV since SummerSlam, where he lost the World Heavyweight Championship to CM Punk, which was followed by the Seth Rollins Money in the Bank cash in shortly afterwards. With previous reports indicating that The Ring General was dealing with an injury, there has been no update as to when he will be back in action.
