Matt Riddle Unlikely To Make Appearance In AEW

Why Matt Riddle will not be making any AEW appearances anytime soon.

Matt Riddle becoming All Elite does not appear to be a possibility anytime soon.

September 22nd will mark one year since Riddle was released from his WWE contract. A source within the company stated that the former Tag Team Champion had “burned through too many chances” while in WWE and was also intoxicated and disruptive at JFK airport earlier that month, resulting in Riddle being taken off TV.

Following the release, Riddle has competed for MLW and NJPW, which also included a brief reign with the NJPW Strong TV Championship, but has yet to appear for AEW as either a one-off or as a contracted talent. While Riddle’s controversial past remains a point of contention for some fans, there was a belief that due to his star power from his time in WWE that Riddle joining AEW was a possibility.

However, Riddle recently spoke to Steven Muelhausen for Sports Illustrated and stated that while there has been a conversation with Tony Khan, it did not go as well as the former WWE star may have expected:

“I talked to Tony. I don’t know if he likes me. He seemed happy. I wrestled Zach Sabre Jr. in Chicago. He seemed cool about it. I don’t know. When you meet me, I’m very sarcastic. But when I met him, I was like, ‘Oh, you like that match’?

“But I said it a different way, and he looked at me all confused. And I was like, ‘Never mind, dude’. I just walked away. So that was my experience with that.”

More On Matt Riddle Not Joining AEW

More information on the Riddle and AEW relationship was provided by Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select. In the report, it is noted that Khan “has not had any interest” in bringing in Riddle to the company and that AEW talent do not wrestle against him on the independents, except for in Mexico.
