Malakai Black Seemingly Finishing Up With AEW

Malakai Black has an uncertain future in AEW and may be the next star to leave the promotion.

Malakai Black looks to be reaching the end of his time in AEW, according to a new report.

Black has not competed in AEW since he and Brody King unsuccessfully challenged for the Tag Team Championships at Full Gear. While not seen on the January 8th episode of AEW Dynamite, Black was referenced on the show. After Will Ospreay defeated House of Black’s Buddy Matthews in the opening contest, Opsreay cut a promo stating that he was impressed with Matthews’s and King’s performances and encouraged them to break away from the House of Black and continue as a duo or even two singles stars.

In an update on Black by Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select, those within the company believe that Black “was finishing up with AEW if he hadn’t already” and did not clarify if he would appear on AEW TV again. Fightful Select previously reported that there were option years in Black’s contract after 2024 but it was unknown if these were picked up. Tony Khan previously stated in interviews that Black’s contract expired in 2027 but this has been disputed. Fightful also adds the following in the report regarding Black’s deal:

“To be clear, we can’t say definitively that Black’s contract is up, or that an option had been declined, picked up, or anything transactional.”

Malakai Black Announced For Independent Date

Black will make a rare independent appearance for Coastal Championship Wrestling’s Havoc & Haze 9 on January 11th. The former Trios Champion will be in action against Orion, who is a trainer at Black and Zelina Vega’s gym.
