Legendary British documentary maker Louis Theroux has been honoured for his piece on professional wrestling that was released 26 years ago.
On May 19, Theroux announced on social media that he had been inducted into the Allied Independent Wrestling Federation’s [AIWF] Hall of Fame as part of the 2026 class. Reflecting on the show that was recorded back in the year 2000, Theroux played a couple of clips from the documentary before revealing that he had received a plaque from the American promotion. Theroux thanked the promotion for still remembering him all these years later, and encouraged fans to check them out.
The episode was part of a series called Weird Weekends, which saw Theroux “delve into the weirder fringes of American society.” Along with professional wrestling, demolition derbys, swinging and pornography are among the topics covered.
Louis Theroux Pushed To The Limit In Pro Wrestling Documentary
Trying to understand the world of professional wrestling, Theroux opens by talking with Raven, who questions why Theroux is filming him and making the documentary. Following the opening title, Theorux notes that he is “on a mission to find out about the most popular sport in America, which isn’t really a sport.” Being given backstage access to WCW, Theorux is seen interacting with Randy Savage, Roddy Piper and Goldberg.
Along with trying to grasp the concept of the industry with independent promotion AIWF, Theroux is also given the opportunity to train at the WCW Power Plant. With word getting around that Theroux was questioning the predetermined nature of wrestling, coach Sarge pushed the British documentarian to the point of vomiting during cardio drills. Being given the moniker “Waldo”, Theroux also attempts to cut a promo during the intensive session.
Returning to AIWF following the try-out, the independent promotion were not surprised at how far Theroux was pushed during his training.
For fans in the UK, the episode is still available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
In other news, more matches were added to the Saturday Night’s Main Event special.
