Kurt Angle has given his thoughts on John Cena’s upcoming retirement and who he thinks should have the honour of being the final opponent.
On June 27th 2002, Angle hosted an open challenge that was answered by a young Cena. While few knew who Cena was at that point, more than 22 years later the man once known as The Prototype went on to win 16 World Championships and is now a star in Hollywood. Set to retire in 2025, fans are already fantasy booking who Cena should face at the big events and ultimately, who the final opponent should be.
Although many want to see Cena vs. Orton one more time given their history over the past 2 decades, Angle has a different opponent in mind. Speaking with MuscleManMalcolm, Angle wants to see Cena vs. Roman Reigns 3 and with a World Championship on the line:
“Probably Roman Reigns. Knowing where Roman was when he started. I remember a promo where John put him in his place. I think they would have a good storyline coming up if they decided to have the last match Cena vs. Roman. For John Cena’s credit, it should be for the World Title. He’s won 16 World Titles in WWE, no one have done that before. Ric Flair won 16, but he did with NWA, WCW, and WWE. John Cena has won 16 titles in WWE. No one has ever done that. I think he deserves a title shot,”
Reigns and Cena have faced off twice previously, Their first encounter came at No Mercy 2017 with Reigns emerging victorious. The rematch took place at SummerSlam 2022 with The Tribal Chief once again emerging the victor.
John Cena will return to WWE as part of the debut episode of WWE Raw on Netflix.
Kurt Angle To Return To WWE?
Given that Angle was Cena’s first match and that the Hall of Famer wanted Cena for his own retirement match, Angle was previously asked if he would be interested in the offer. Unfortunately, Angle made it clear that due to decades of being in the ring, he is no longer able to perform and remains retired following his WrestleMania loss to Baron Corbin in 2019. However, in a recent interview, Kurt Angle stated that if the money was right he would consider a WWE return.
