Contrary to what some may have believed or have reported, Kurt Angle was never pencilled in as the one to defeat The Undertaker for the first time ever at WrestleMania.
A WWE record that is likely to never be broken, Undertaker remained undefeated at The Show of Shows for 21 consecutive matches, with big wins over the likes of Triple H, Batista and CM Punk among his legendary streak. The run came to an end at WrestleMania 30 in 2014, when Brock Lesnar became the first man to pin The Phenom at the biggest show of the year.
When The Streak became established and officially acknowledged on TV, interviews have circulated with multiple names being pitched to end The Streak much earlier, but chose not to out of respect for the Hall of Famer. While the likes of Randy Orton and Edge were considered, the Olympic Gold Medalist was not one of the names.
Angle appeared on Undertaker’s podcast Six Feet Under to talk about their many rivalries over the years. When the topic of WrestleMania came up, Undertaker confirmed that he wanted to wrestle Angle at Mania, but not to have The Streak broken:
“No, I don’t want anybody to break that. We wanted to wrestle at ‘Mania, but I didn’t want anybody to break the streak.”
Angle agreed, noting that they brought the idea up to Vince McMahon for them to wrestle at Mania, but it was shot down:
We wanted to wrestle each other… I don’t think the streak should have been broken. We presented it to Vince, and Vince said, ‘No, you’re going to wrestle the month before.’ That’s what he said.”
When Did Kurt Angle And The Undertaker Wrestle Instead Of WrestleMania?
Angle and Undertaker faced off in the main event of No Way Out 2006 with the World Heavyweight Championship on the line. Angle retained the title at the show as Mark Henry interfered, resulting in a casket match between Henry and Undertaker taking place at WrestleMania, which Undertaker won. For Angle, the Hall of Famer lost the World Heavyweight Championship to Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania in a triple threat match that also featured Randy Orton.
