Jon Moxley has addressed the need for a promotion like AEW.
Back in 2019, All Elite Wrestling was created at a time when many wrestling fans felt bored with what WWE was putting on. With Dynamite having more exciting and violent matches that Raw or SmackDown most weeks, there is a market for AEW in the wrestling world.
However, it could be argued that there have been points where the promotion has gone too far considering they have networks to keep happy, such as the use of a pizza cutter on TV and very bloody matches on TV and PPV.
Moxley was interviewed by Comic Book to discuss the violent nature of the promotion. Mox, who is often a part of these matches, described how AEW is the alternative brand and he refuses to have an off night when placed in hardcore matches:
“When it comes to matches like that, that’s one small thing that we can do differently than anybody else in this s–t. That was one thing I remember, telling (AEW President) Tony [Khan] that when I first came in. ‘If you’re going to put me in one of these matches, be careful what you wish for because I am not in the business of under-delivering.’ I’m not spitting some taglines of like, I’m going to crush your skull with my fingers and pull out your eyeballs and all this s–t and then we’re not going to do it. AEW has been able to consistently deliver on that.
Moxley continued by referencing AEW as a whole. With no one able to do WWE’s style better than WWE themselves, it would be futile to try and imitate the competition. Moxley is aware of this and described how AEW is different and borderline polarising:
I think it’s very important for us to always remember where this started in the first place, which was the need in the industry for an alternative. We should always be different. We should always be thinking about what we can deliver that nobody else can. Otherwise, we’re just another wrestling company, of which there have been a million. Not every single match needs to be chopping each other’s heads off. But that’s one small thing and I definitely feel like I’ve definitely held up my end on that in that small area of the business. If you can’t be the first in a category, create a new category in which you can be the first,”
Jon Moxley Aims For Triple Crown Championship
The former World Champion is currently a part of the AEW Continental Classic, which will culminate at Worlds End. If Mox wins the tournament, he will hold titles in AEW, ROH and NJPW.
