John Cena has taken to social media to address his recent run in WWE. Cena posted a tweet where he thanked both the fans and the employees of WWE for all of the support he has received in his appearances over the past few weeks.
The 16 time world champion appeared in multiple televised segments from Money in the Bank up until SummerSlam. While not wrestling any matches on network TV, John Cena did frequently wrestle at non-televised WWE house show events. The house show matches predominately saw Cena team with Rey and Dominik Mysterio to face The Bloodline faction of SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Usos and Universal Champion Roman Reigns.
The star of The Suicide Squad only had one match on camera, which was a championship match against Reigns at SummerSlam. Roman defeated Cena by pinfall in the main event of the August pay per view. This was the last televised appearance of John Cena. However, when SummerSlam went off the air, Cena was attacked by a returning Brock Lesnar, who made his surprise return at the end of the show.
As mentioned in the end of the Tweet, John Cena will be going away for now but has mentioned another return will happen. Currently the only WWE date in the future for Cena is on Friday September 10th, where WWE will be hosting a Super SmackDown show at Madison Square Garden in New York. It should be noted that in a report by PWInsider it has been stated that John Cena will not be available for the foreseeable future due to filming commitments. There is currently no timetable for another return to WWE.
The Summer of Cena began with a surprise return on July 18th, where the confrontation with Roman reigns first started:
