John Cena officiated the WWE Payback match between LA Knight and The Miz.
The 16-time world champion served as the host of the Premium Live Event in Pittsburgh. Cena announced that he would be the special referee for the upcoming match, much to the annoyance of The Miz.
Miz stated that Cena should take his advice as a host to be more involved, dress better and to know his role. Miz then stated that Cena did not have a referee shirt, so one was handed to him. LA Knight then came out and it was made official that Cena would be the referee.
In the match itself, Cena would call it down the middle, preventing both men from cheating to gain momentum. Both men would argue with Cena and it looked like the referee may get knocked down at multiple points, but ultimately called Knight’s victory.
After the match, Knight and Cena had a face-to-face and it looked like a future match may be set up, but both men shook hands on the top of the ramp.
